If you've just arrived in Australia, ready to embark on your life in your new country, one of the first things you'll need to sort out is getting a Tax File Number (TFN) - its critical for basically everything financial.

But don't stress – we've got you covered with this comprehensive guide on how to get a TFN in Australia.

Lets get started!

What's a TFN and Why Do You Need One?

A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique identifier issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Think of it as your personal ID for all things tax-related in Australia. Here's why it's crucial:

  • It's required to work in Australia (even for part-time or casual jobs) - businesses need to know your TFN by law when they employ you so they can report your taxes to the government.

  • You'll need it to open a bank account - again, for taxes, and to help prove who you are

  • Some universities require it for enrolment

  • It ensures you're taxed at the correct rate

  • It's necessary for accessing government services and benefits

The TFN will be a 9 digit number, usually displayed in the format 123 456 789. The number is unique to you, and will never change during your time in Australia - even if you leave the country and come back later.

In short, your TFN is your ticket to fully participating in the Australian economic system.

Are You Eligible?

Good news! Even if you're in Australia on a student or temporary visa, you're still eligible to apply for a TFN. The key requirements (according to the government website) for Australian non-citizens are:

  • You are a foreign passport holder, permanent migrant or temporary visitor.

  • You are already in Australia.

  • Your visa is one of the following

    • a permanent resident visa

    • a visa with work rights

    • an overseas student visa

    • a visa allowing you to stay in Australia indefinitely.

Even if you are not planning to work, you should sign up for a TFN as soon as you arrive. Even if you become an Australian citizen in the future, your TFN will not change.

The Step-by-Step Process to Apply for a TFN

Online Application Method (Recommended)

  1. Visit the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website (www.ato.gov.au) and navigate to the "Apply for a TFN" section (or just click on this link and select the visa situation that best applies to you. For most of you, that will be ‘Foreign passport holders, permanent migrants and temporary visitors’

  2. Read through the details, and then click on the big blue button that says ‘Apply online for a TFN using the IAR’

  3. Create a myGov account and link it to the ATO (if you haven't already)

  4. Fill out the online TFN application form

  5. Submit your application

Paper Application Method (If Online Isn't Possible)

While less common, you can still apply via paper form:

  1. Download the "Tax file number - application or enquiry for individuals living outside Australia" form from the ATO website

  2. Fill out the form carefully and in block letters

  3. Collect certified copies of your identification documents

  4. Mail the completed form and certified documents to the address provided on the form

Documentation Needed

Make sure you have these documents ready before you start your application:

  • Your valid passport

  • Your student visa details

  • An Australian address - your TFN will be mailed here, so make sure it can receive mail!

  • Your course details, including the name and details of your educational institution

  • Date of arrival in Australia

You might also need to provide additional supporting documents, so have these on hand just in case:

  • Birth certificate

  • Foreign driver's license

  • National ID card from your home country

Remember - all of your proof of ID documents need to be officially translated before they can be used in Australia, which is a good idea to get done before you leave!

Frequently Asked Questions

Even the smoothest systems can hit snags. Here are some common issues and how to tackle them:

How long does it take for the TFN to come?

The tax file number will normally be issued to you within 28 days.

How will I receive my TFN?

The ATO will mail an official document out to the address you listed on your application. So make sure you get that address correct!

What If i made a mistake on my application?

If you think you made a mistake on your application, you should reach out directly to the ATO using one of the methods at the bottom of the article. Its critical that they have the correct information for you to avoid any problems down the line.

What If i moved house since my application?

See the point above re: changing a mistake. But to be safe, you should use an address that you think you will not be moving from when you apply - dont use a hostel or hotel for example.

Its been a while, and my TFN hasn't arrived?

You can follow up directly with the ATO if it has been more than 28 days without seeing your TFN.

I got my TFN, but I lost the paper and cant remember it? Do I apply again?

No - you only get one TFN for life. Once it has been issued, you should be able to log in and see your TFN through the myGov website.

I need to start work but my TFN hasn't arrived yet

If you need to start work before your TFN arrives, you can give your employer a completed "Tax file number declaration" form that states you have applied but are waiting for the number. You'll have 28 days from your first day of work to provide your TFN.

Using Your TFN

Now that you've got your TFN, here's when and where to use it:

  • Provide it to your employer when you start a new job

  • Give it to your bank when opening an account

  • Use it when lodging your tax return

  • Provide it to your education provider if required

Remember, your TFN is sensitive information. Keep it secure and only share it when necessary. Never put it on your resume or share it on social media!

Summing up

Getting your TFN sorted is a crucial step in setting yourself up for success in Australia. It might seem like a bit of a hassle now, but trust us, you'll be glad you took care of it early. With your TFN in hand, you'll be ready to work, study, and fully immerse yourself in the Aussie way of life.
